DS Record Radar: This Week in Punk Vinyl (Implants, Less Than Jake, The Young Hasselhoffs, Bad Astronaut & More)

Greetings, and welcome to the Dying Scene Record Radar. If it’s your first time here, thank you for joining us! This is the weekly* column where we cover all things punk rock vinyl; new releases, reissues… you name it, we’ve probably got it. Kick off your shoes, pull up a chair, crack open a cold one, and break out those wallets, because it’s go time. Let’s get into it!

Check out the video edition of this week’s Record Radar, presented by Punk Rock Radar:

Melodic punk supergroup Implants (members of Strung Out, Pulley, Ten Foot Pole, etc.) are on the cusp of completing the comeback of the century, as pre-orders have opened for the band’s long awaited new record Annihilation. It’s due out October 18th on Cyber Tracks and available on three beautiful color variants. Check out the killer lead single below and pre-order the record here.

Less Than Jake continues to absolutely milk me for every cent I’m worth with their second new 7″ in as many months (and one of many LTJ records to come this year surely). This one features their two latest singles “Not My Problem” and “Brand New Day”. You can get just this 7″ for $20, or you can get it in a bundle with the last 7″ for $26, or you can do what any sensible person would do and just wait until the next two 7″s come out and buy all four at once (evidently I am not a sensible person).

On a related note! The purple color variant of the 2022 reissue of Less Than Jake’s In With the Out Crowd is on sale for $8.99 right now at Real Gone Music. Perhaps that will soften the blow of all these $20 7″ purchases? Probably not!

Our friends at Mom’s Basement Records continue to give pop-punk veterans The Young Hasselhoffs’ back catalog the tender love and appreciation it very much deserves with their latest in a series of colored vinyl reissues, this time for 1998’s Win a Date With the Young Hasselhoffs. Head over to their webstore to get it on three ballin’ color variants, along with test press copies, and a T-Shirt!

SoCal pop-punks Go Betty Go (who you may know from the Burnout 3 soundtrack!) just released a new 12″ EP out now on Wiretap Records. Black & Blue is streaming everywhere and you can get it on classic black wax (limited to 250 copies) right here. And if you’re in Los Angeles, catch the band’s Record Release Show at the Paramount this Thursday, September 19th.

Not to be outdone by NOFX and Sum 41, Swedish hardcore punk legends Refused have announced they are throwing in the towel – for real this time. Pinky promise. And to coincide with the announcement of their North American Farewell Tour, the band has also announced a massive 5-LP 25th Anniversary The Shape of Punk to Come vinyl reissue. Aaaaaaand it’s sold out. But hey, maybe they’ll have a tour variant or a second pressing or something, right? For now, I guess keep checking the band’s webstore every hour to see if some more copies pop up.

Speaking of things that are sold out: I present Bad Astronaut’s new acoustic record Untethered. Colored vinyl is sold out on Fat Wreck’s US store, but if you’re okay with paying a slight premium for shipping (and like $15 more for the record itself for some fuckin reason), it’s still in stock on Fat’s EU merch store. Or you can just get it on black vinyl (or perhaps compact disc?) on the US store idk.

Have you ever wanted to hear New Found Glory cover a song from The Little Mermaid, or perhaps Yellowcard’s take on “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?”, or maybe even Bowling For Soup’s rendition of “Friend Like Me” from Aladdin? If so, Disney’s new compilation record A Whole New Sound may be of interest, because it features all those things, and more! You can get it on white w/ black splatter colored vinyl right here.

Punkerton Records has been on a heater lately with new releases, and they’re staying hot with the announcement of a new split 7″ just in time for Halloween. New York punk band Half Dizzy’s “The Faceless” (ft. The Slackers’ Vic Ruggiero) occupies Side A and Michigan ska-punks The Boy Detective’s “For the Record, I’m Not a Cannibal Anymore” (ft. Jason Navarro of the Suicide Machines) is on Side B. There are an intimidating 12 (yes, 12) color variants available to pre-order here.

And we’re gonna wrap up this week’s Record Radar with something different: a cassette release! Fort Worth, Texas hardcore punk band Antirad knows time is money and maybe that’s why their new EP gives you 8 songs in just under 8 minutes. Speaking of money! You can obtain this EP on a state of the art slime green cassette tape for just $12 postage paid anywhere in the continental United States. If that sounds like something you might be interested in, hit the band up on Facebook or Instagram – or maybe send them an email – to grab a copy. This shit’s bad ass by the way; check it out below 👇

Well, that’s all, folks. Another Record Radar in the books. Short one this week! As always, thank you for tuning in. If there’s anything we missed (highly likely), or if you want to let everyone know about a new/upcoming vinyl release you’re excited about, leave us a comment below, or send us a message on Facebook or Instagram, and we’ll look into it. Enjoy your weekend, and don’t blow too much money on spinny discs (or do, I’m not your father). See ya next time!
